A renowned Veterinary Expert and Consultant, Dr. Junaidu Maina FCVSN; has called on the Post Graduate College of Veterinary Surgeons Nigeria, Poultry Association of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to come together and champion a practical pilot to demonstrate the export readiness of Nigerian Poultry products.
Speaking, as the Keynote Speaker, at the 6th Convocation and 8th Investiture Ceremony of the Post Graduate College of Veterinary Surgeons Nigeria; Dr. Junaidu Maina expressed that the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is an incredible opportunity to position Nigeria as a country that can build a resilient and globally competitive livestock industry but must however overcome the barriers that can hamper the sustainability of the benefits of the opportunity and also ensure all the ingredients of success available in the country’s livestock sector are performing at their full potential.
He explained that Nigeria’s livestock industry must be able to anticipate, prevent, withstand, adapt to, and recover rapidly from disease outbreaks, environmental and climate stresses, market disruption and other shocks. Beyond that, the livestock industry must consistently produce safe, high quality livestock and livestock products, that meet national and international standards, including animal health, food safety, quality assurance, sanitary and phytosanitary requirements.
He concluded on the note that Nigeria must not only focus on feeding herself, she must also focus on competing successfully in the regional and global markets. It is to that end that he made the call that the three bodies should collaborate on championing a practical pilot to demonstrate the export readiness of Nigerian Poultry products. He said such a pilot would showcase safe, high-quality poultry products that meet international SPS and Codex requirements through modern processing, cold-chain logistics, quality assurance, certification and traceability.
