The University of Ibadan Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is set to commence a degree program that can start awarding Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing.
This disclosure was made by the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan; Professor B.O Olugasa in his message released.
“TODAY, THURSDAY, 13 AUGUST, 2026 AT THE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING THE PROPOSAL FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (BSc) VETERINARY NURSING PROGRAMME (PAPER DC2026B) WAS APPROVED SUBJECT TO MINOR CORRECTIONS” He said.
“I am pleased to inform all that the University of Ibadan Development Committee has approved our proposed BSc Veterinary Nursing programme. It was earlier approved by the Senate Curriculum Committee, 20 January, 2026. Our Faculty is the first in any Nigerian University to approve the BSc Veterinary Nursing programme for establishment.” He added.
“This is the dream of Professor Adetunji achieved, through the collective efforts of my predecessors in office, the Professor M. O. Oyeyemi-led Veterinary Nursing Committee that put the final proposal together and the Faculty Curriculum Committee that adopted the proposal, as well as the Faculty Board of Veterinary Medicine that supported the proposal. The Dean of Nursing has been very supportive all the way, the Dean of Clinical Sciences (College of Medicine). as well as the Head of the Department of Psychology.” He concluded
With the readiness of the Faculty and the University to commence the Veterinary Nursing program, the approval of the National Universities Commission and the Veterinary Council of Nigeria would seal the accreditation required for the program among other necessary formalities.
For long, the provision of animal health has had to rely on the Veterinary Doctors, Animal health technicians, Animal scientists and other allied animal related specialities. However with the introduction of Veterinary Nursing, the animal health sector in Nigeria is about to get more strengthened with more professional workforce to work alongside the existing animal healthcare providers and enhance the quality of healthcare for animals in Nigeria.
We look forward to the success of the program in the University of Ibadan and the adoption in more Veterinary faculties in other Universities in Nigeria.
